From Dec. 1998 through May 2008, I implanted over 115 patients with an ankle prosthesis. The patients came to Miami from 12 states, Ecuador, and Costa Rica, were 15-83 years old, and weighed 110-375 pounds when implanted. They were in Miami for 2-3 days and the post operative care was done in their home city.
This site has over 20 pages about ankle implants in use around the world. Please print or read this entire site as there is a great deal of information.
Buechel-Pappas Total Ankle Prosthesis
This prosthesis became available to Americans in October of 1998.
This procedure is specifically for individuals with severe ankle pain from either Rheumatoid Arthritis or Arthritis from a previously broken ankle. In addition, In most cases a patient who has had their ankle fused may have the fusion removed and replaced with a functioning ankle joint; the Buechel-Pappas total ankle prosthesis.
As an Orthopedic Surgeon, Podiatric Surgeon, Family Physician, Internist, Physiatrist, Podiatrist, PT/Rehabilitation Therapist or Rheumatologist, you see patients who have debilitating ankle pain from rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis from previously fractured ankles. Until now, these patients faced ankle fusion as the only possible source of pain relief. Total ankle joint replacement with the Buechel-Pappas Total Ankle Prosthesis is a proven alternative to debilitating ankle fusion. It is so successful that in some cases it is possible to take down a fused ankle and replace it with a functioning ankle joint. Read more
